But when the 36-hole cut was made here yesterday at the $100,000 Payless Open, Bermuda's Swan was left on the outside looking in.

The St. George's GC director of golf fired rounds of 75 and 77 over the 6,315-yard Uplands Golf Course layout, where par is 70. Those scores followed a blistering eight-birdie round of 67 in Wednesday's Pro-Am.

Swan's 152 total was expected to be nine or 10 shots above the cut, which was likely to be at around two or three over par. Several groups were still out on the course at press-time last night.

Swan was unable to make the cut in two Canada Tour events in 1992. However, he was hoping that a revamped swing and improved mental outlook would propel him into weekend play on this visit north.

Swan will use his second sponsor's exemption to gain entry into next week's $125,000 B.C. Tel Pacific Open at Mayfair Lakes Golf Club in Richmond, just outside Vancouver.

The featured performer there will be former Masters and Tour Championship winner Craig Stadler, who will be joined as gallery favourite by American teenage sensation Ted Oh and defending champion Craig Jones of Australia, who won last year's tournament with a 16-under 268 total.

Canada's 1994 Dunhill Championship team of Dave Barr and Ray Stewart round out a strong field.
