Boulevard and Colts in search of a win
League action resumes tonight at BAA Field (8 p.m.) with a promising fixture on tap featuring newly promoted Boulevard and Devonshire Colts - two sides in search of their first league win of the fledgling season.
Last weekend the Blazers displayed plenty of promise against Somerset Trojans but suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss, thanks largely to some lethargic finishing and, as the players might point out, some dubious refereeing decisions.
Colts, on the other hand, managed to hold reigning league champions North Village to a scoreless draw in the champions' own back yard.
Colts captain Shannon Burgess is expected to resume his role at the heart of the team's defence after missing last weekend's match while a question mark dangles over Quincy Aberdeen who has been a surprise absentee so far.
Tomorrow, high riding Somerset travel to Bernard Park to take on an under strength Village side.
The visitors will be looking to extend their rich vein of form after Tuesday's impressive 3-2 Martonmere Cup triumph over Dandy Town.
After 180 minutes of soccer, Village have only one goal and two uneventful draws to show for their efforts.
"The main thing is that we haven't lost," pointed out Village coach Scott Morton. "And one of our main objectives for the season is to concede less goals - so far we have managed to only concede one.
"Obviously, everyone would like a victory but for the moment we have to take what we can when we can get it," added Morton, whose team are still missing several key players.
They will now also be without Kevin Jennings, injured during Tuesday's cup match against PHC.
Somerset will be missing Rohaan Simons and Dion Stovell, while doubts still remain on captain Karl Roberts' availability.
At White Hill Field, newly-promoted Somerset Eagles will be looking to seize their first win and points of the season at the expense of Dandy Town.
During last weekend's opening match against Devonshire Cougars, the home side ended up on the short end of a 2-1 loss to the reigning Martonmere champions.
Town, meanwhile, will be looking to build on their season opening 3-2 league victory over PHC while also trying to avoid going down to two successive losses against Somerset teams in the space of five days.
PHC host Devonshire Cougars at Somerset Cricket Club. The last time these two sides met in the Martonmere Cup, PHC galloped to a comprehensive 4-1 drubbing of their urban rivals, a memory Cougars will be looking to erase.
It remains to be seen whether Zebras' forward Stephen Astwood makes a swift return to the squad after missing Tuesday's clash with Village because of a slight foot injury.
In the First Division, two of the teams most likely to feature in the race for promotion, Hamilton Parish and Social Club, square off at Bernard Park while Southampton Rangers go in search of their first league win of the season against St.George's at Southampton Oval.
Prospect kick off their season in earnest at Police Field against Paget while St.David's travel the length of the Island to take on Ireland Rangers at Malabar field.
In women's action, PHC meet Dandy Stars at Somerset while top dogs Rude Girls tackle Prospect at Police Field.
The BFA/AS&K pre-season youth tournament gets underway today at the National Sports Centre and concludes tomorrow at the same venue.
All First Division and women's fixtures have been moved forward to 12.30 p.m., while the Premier Division matches will kick off at 2.30 p.m.
