Guyana too good for Bermuda

Guyana proved to be too powerful for a battling Bermuda who were defeated by the Caribbbean nation in the girls' and boys' team finals of the Junior CASA Squash Championships yesterday.

Bermuda's boys' team was narrowly defeated 3-2, while the girls' side was swept aside 5-0 by a strong Guyana team who did not concede a single game.

Denise Sommers, Bermuda's national coach, said she was pleased with her players performances throughout the competition and believed they had shown enormous improvement.

"We were seeded fourth in both boys' and girls' team championships, so reaching the finals and finishing second in both is even better than expected," said Sommers.

"Guyana have an exceptionally strong girls team and were always going to win, but this year our girls gave them a good run around.

"We're had an excellent performance by both of our teams. We have a young squad and they can only get better.

"After competing so well it should inspire them to continue improving.

"The future looks good for our juniors."

Bermuda girls' team Alex Marshall, Kelly Barnes, Rachel Barnes, Emma Keane and Jenni Schroder all showed plenty of spirit, but were out-classed by their talented opposition.

The Boys' team started their final well with Noah Browne beating Abhishek Singh, but the excellent Alex Arjoon then defeated Kristian Muldoon.

Skipper Robbie Maycock, who was the tournament's Under-19 individual champion, gave his team the lead by beating Raphael deGroot in an impressive display.

With possible victory in sight for Bermuda, Beckett Simmons then faced Nyron Joseph and suffered a three-nil defeat.

The decider was between Micah Franklin and Oliver Kear-Downs with Bermuda's hopeful suffering a leg injury, which hindered his game and he eventually lost to give Guyana a clean sweep.
