The Bermuda Police service today celebrated the birthday of Detective Inspector Milton Marsh, the service's oldest retired officer.Det Insp Marsh, 102, joined the police on June 30, 1941, and was awarded the Colonial Police Medal for his contributions in 1964 when he retired from the service.Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva thanked Det Insp Marsh for his contributions to the service, giving him a card and chocolate.“It's just a little something to say happy birthday to the oldest retired officer that we have in Bermuda, and that's quite an honour,” Mr DeSilva said.Mr DeSilva said that looking through Det Insp Marsh's files, he found that in 1959 he had received a Commissioner's commendation for his investigation of a murder.“And in addition to the Commissioner's commendation, you also received a bonus of £5,” Mr DeSilva said. “Please don't let my staff know that, because it might catch on.”Det Insp Marsh said that when he was involved with the service, officers had a different set of challenges than officers today.“We were not as advanced as you are now, and most of the time we had to do our work under very difficult circumstances,” he said.“Sometimes we would arrest a man and have to carry him on our shoulders, physically carry him to our destination, the police station, which was very antiquated.”Asked if he would be interested in coming out of retirement and rejoining the service, Det Insp Marsh responded: “No sir.”Useful Websites: www.bps.bm.
