Oldest retired Police officer celebrates 102nd birthday
The Bermuda Police Service yesterday celebrated the birthday of 102-year-old Detective Inspector Milton Marsh, the service’s oldest retired officer. He was awarded the Colonial Police Medal (CPM) for his contributions in 1964 when he retired from the service.Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva thanked Det Insp Marsh for his contributions to the service, giving him a card and chocolate.“I understand you have a bit of a sweet tooth, so we have some treats to go with your birthday cake,” Mr DeSilva said. “It’s just a little something to say happy birthday to the oldest retired officer that we have in Bermuda, and that’s quite an honour.“I don’t know if you’re actually aware of this, but you received your CPM and retired from the police service before I was born.”Det Insp Marsh thanked the Commissioner for the gift, saying: “It is a pleasure to be honoured by you and your dedicated men, who are doing a pretty good job.”Mr DeSilva said that looking through Det Insp Marsh’s files, he found that in 1959 he had received a Commissioner’s Commendation for his investigation of a murder.“And in addition to the Commissioner’s Commendation, you also received a bonus of £5,” Mr DeSilva said. “Please don’t let my staff know that, because it might catch on.”During his career, Det Insp Marsh earned a total of seven Commissioner’s Commendations for various investigations and arrests.Asked yesterday if he would be interested in coming out of retirement and rejoining the service, Det Insp Marsh smiled and responded: “No sir.”Useful website: www.police.bm.
