The Ministry of Public Works has set aside $200,000 to address longstanding flooding problems in Pembroke.

Mill Creek frequently floods during high tides and heavy rains, drowning Mill Creek Road in several inches of water and restricting access to businesses.

Trash accumulation at the sluice gate in the canal contributes to the overall problem which affects numerous flood-prone areas of Pembroke.

A government spokesman said: “The Ministry of Public Works very much understands and appreciates the frustration caused by the flooding and is working to address it.

“The public would be aware that the area in question was once low lying marshland, converted into roads, followed by warehouse construction. It is common in these areas that water tends to pool much more rapidly than in others. The flooding in the area of Mill Creek has persisted without resolve for over a century.

“To help alleviate the issue, the ministry has budgeted $200,000 in the 2021/22 budget. Plans include regular cleaning and maintenance, including upgrades to the grate and valve, which will reduce the occurrence of floods.”

Businesses and area residents have long complained about the flooding in the area branding it as a safety hazard and hindrance to business. A protest group in the Mill Creek area was formed in 2015.

The spokesman said that the ministry is willing to meet with area residents and businesses to discuss how they can work together “to increase the climate resilience of the area”.
