Plans for a virtual Ag Show postponed

Plans to host a “virtual” Ag Show have been pushed back in the wake of the latest surge of Covid-19 cases.

While the event was scheduled to be held online this year through a live broadcast on April 23, the Ag Show Ltd Committee have pushed back the show to a date yet to be determined.

Antwan Albuoy, exhibition director, said: “The Agricultural Show is one of Bermuda’s most iconic events and has brought together residents and locals alike since the 1920s to celebrate the island’s unique heritage and talent.

“While the rise in positive coronavirus cases has made it impossible to proceed with the event on the original date, we have decided to postpone the event rather than cancel it.

“In recent months, we have heard from many teachers and the recurring message from them is preparing exhibits and entries has been a welcome distraction for schoolchildren, providing them with a glimmer of hope in what has otherwise been a bleak time for many.”

While the Ag Show is usually held at the Botanical Gardens, organisers this year decided to move the show online with a broadcast to showcase local produce, student art and a wide range of animal exhibits.

A spokeswoman said: “Taking place at a future date this spring, it is hoped the Virtual Ag Show will help to keep local culture and traditions alive for people young and old.

“The Ag Show Committee has asked that members of the public do not deliver any art work to the Bermuda Society of Arts in City Hall, as it is currently closed.

“AG Show Ltd will advise the various educational institutions where and when the judging of the art work will take place.”

The spokeswoman also thanked the event’s sponsors, including Axis Capital, and volunteers.
