National champion Rory Caslin continued his good form as he took an early lead in series two of Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association’s Hardy Autumn competition which began on Sunday in Granaway Deep.After five races in the Gold Fleet in winds ranging from 10 to 15 knots, Caslin emerged with a two-point lead over Chase Cooper and three ahead of Antonio Bailey and Ceci Wollmann.In a fleet of 11 sailors, there was only one first place finish out of a possible 15 for the top three over the five races, indicating the shifty conditions upset the usual “pecking order”. New Gold Fleeter Matilda Nicholls showed that she belonged in that category as she led almost all of race three and was just pipped at the finish on the last beat by Caslin.In a record 20-boat Silver Fleet, sailing in Hamilton Harbour, Kieran Swann won the day with three firsts and two seconds.He was pushed hard by Joe Arrowsmith and Yanick Hillier.The most improved sailor of the day was Camile Chin who finished the last two races of the day with a second and a first.The series continues this Sunday.Sunday’s results - see Scoreboard Page 18.
