Girl amongst seven arrested

Gathering evidence: Police investigators look for clues at the public entrance of Elbow Beach yesterday.

A teenage girl yesterday became the seventh person arrested following the beach party murder of Kellon Hill.

As tributes continue to pour in for the 18-year-old described as a fun-loving young family man, more calls were yesterday made to end the culture of gang violence which is scourging the Island.

Mr. Hill, from Southampton, was set upon by gatecrashers to a party as he sat on his motorcycle in Elbow Beach's public entrance, Tribe Road #4B, shortly before 11.30 p.m. on Saturday.

It is believed he was fatally stabbed when he attempted to stop them stealing the gold chain from around his neck.

Six men were arrested at a house in Woodlawn Road, Sandys, at 4 a.m. on Sunday. The teenage girl was arrested yesterday.

However, a taxi driver who transported a group of suspects from the Elbow Beach area to White Hill, Sandys, has failed to respond to Police requests to come forward.

Detectives initially appealed for help from the driver who was believed to have taken the suspected perpetrators from Ice Queen in Paget to the White Hill area.

They are now widening their search to someone who picked up a group of young black men in the Ord Road, South Road andMiddle Road areas in Paget and took them to the White Hill area.A number of sources have said Mr. Hill was not affiliated to any gang saying he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time although it is believed the offenders were gang members. The Family Centre issued a rallying cry for everyone, especially Government, youth groups and Police, to unite against violent crime and support Mr. Hill's family.Executive director Martha Dismont said in a statement:"It is simply time to come together as a collective group. We need each other to put a stop to the violence."The Centre sends its condolences to the family of Kellon Hill, and asks that the community reaches out to support this family."While we need to continue to support the efforts of those who have worked hard to proactively address incidents such as these, we all know that more has to be done. It is time to come together and put the collective wisdom of this island to work."I am asking that Government, youth organisations, social service agencies and the Police come together to see what can be done to reduce and eventually eliminate this onset of youth violence."We have a growing increase in gang activity which encourages this type of behaviour as a form of orientation and show of courage."It is going to take a combination of efforts and activities to get a handle on the situation, which includes proactive policing, very active parenting, and the development of community 'watches' to look out and report concerning behaviour."United BermudaParty spokeswoman Gina Spence-Farmer said in a statement:"Saturday's incident is one more opportunity for us as a society to recognise that we have in our midst a very serious problem."We have a gang problem or, more broadly, a gang mentality problem. It is the elephant in the room in Bermuda, and it is time we faced up to it as a serious and long-term threat to our way of life."We have been in denial about what is going on around us. We've not addressed in a serious, consistent way the gang mentality that has taken hold among scores of our young a mentality that makes something like what happened Saturday night possible."We have children coming of age with no hope, who are disconnected from core values that keep societies together, who are not afraid of the Police, who will go to a public event and take a life."We express our concerns. We say we're mad as hell and not going to take it any longer, but we have to ask if we have really taken the steps necessary to curb the problem. If Kellon's death is to have any positive meaning, it can be that one day people will say that that was when Bermuda turned the corner and got serious about dealing with the problem, that that was when we all started working together to get our young people back on track."More than 240 people have now joined a group paying tribute to Kellon on social networking website Facebook.Bianca Whitney Power wrote:"You were one of the most Humble People i have ever met and You had such a fulfilling life to Live ... It saddens me to think about this but... Rest in Peace babes... Neva forget you."Witnesses should call the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4315 or the confidential CrimeStoppers hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
