Event promotes `tolerance through sports'

Around 100 students will participate in a tennis fun day planned to encourage Island-wide tolerance.

In an effort to promote Bermuda's "Quest for Global Peace and Tolerance" campaign, Global Arts Entertainment has planned the sports initiative to "promote tolerance through sports".

"We wish to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of our Island and share the game of tennis with the entire Bermudian community," spokesman Andrew Phillips said.

The Peace and Tolerance Tennis Fun Day, scheduled for Saturday, July 19, will be held at the Bermuda National Tennis Stadium.

At 9.30 a.m., after opening remarks from Premier Jennifer Smith, students will take to the courts with one of Bermuda's tennis professionals for a one hour lesson.

The full day of tennis includes exhibition matches demonstrating the spirit of peace and tolerance while showcasing the skill of professionals players such as members of the Bermuda National Davis and Federation Cups, Tennis Ladder, and Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) to local politicians such as Dr. Grant Gibbons, Patricia Gordon-Pamplin, Dr. Ewart Brown and Nelson Bascome.

Mr. Phillips highlighted the "Culture vs. Crown" match during which "the Crown" players - Governor Sir John Vereker and BLTA president David Lambert - will compete against "the Culture" players featuring rebel tennis professional Sam Maybury and the Animal from Dread and Baha.

The tennis day is free and Mr. Phillips invited everyone "to come out and lend their support to Bermuda's Quest for Peace and Tolerance".
