Gang violence letter writer urged to contact Police
The Governor and Police Commissioner have advised the anonymous author of a letter about gang crime to take their tip offs to the Police, not give them to the media. The Royal Gazette recieved a copy of the type-written letter this week. Entitled “Word on the Street” it makes a number of allegations about recent gang and gun crimes, who was allegedly responsible for them and why they happened. The contents cannot be detailed for legal reasons. However, a handwritten note in red capital letters on the bottom of the letter states it was also sent to Governor Sir Richard Gozney and the Police Serious Crime Unit. When asked about it, Sir Richard said: “Obviously I cannot respond to the sender of a letter sent anonymously but if I could I would be urging the writer to talk to the Police either directly or through Crimestoppers.”Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva said Intelligence Department officers “assesses the validity of the information to see what, if any, action can be taken” when it recieves such tips.“I would however like to add this: anonymous details of serious crimes being indiscriminately emailed around Bermuda do not really assist our investigations very much,” Mr DeSilva said. “I would encourage everyone who has information or thinks they have information about a crime to submit what they know to Crime Stoppers at 800-8477 (800-TIPS) or contact the police directly.”
