Hamza faces child support court date
could be sent to prison unless he can explain why he has failed to pay out thousands of dollars in contributions to support his family.
Yesterday The Royal Gazette reported that top eye surgeon Dr. Mohammed Hamza, who separated from his wife five years ago, had not made payments to the tune of $60,000 in support of his four children, despite a court order made in 1995 following the divorce settlement.
The Libyan-born doctor, who enjoyed a privileged overseas education, still lives in the family's home in Sandys Parish and rakes in more than $1 million a year. Meanwhile three of his four estranged children are struggling to fund their schooling back in the UK.
The Royal Gazette has now obtained a copy of a judgment summons, issued on Monday, demanding that Dr. Hamza explains why he has not made the payments to his children.
The summons reads: "You, the judgment debtor, have defaulted in payment of the sum of 43,440 pounds under the said order and the judgment creditor has applied for this judgment summons to be issued against you.
"You are therefore summoned to appear personally before one of Her Majesty's judges sitting in chambers at the Supreme Court to be examined on oath touching the means you have or have had since the date of the aforementioned judgment to satisfy the amount claimed payable thereunder and to show cause why you should not be committed to prison for such default.'' When questioned about the case both Dr. Hamza and his attorney, Georgia Marshall, refused to comment.
