Discard Gibbons states his case

Sri Lanka last weekend at a club ground in Lancashire, scoring 33 not out as Sri Lanka won by 15 runs in a high scoring match.

Sri Lanka batted first and scored 314-8 off 50 overs against a West Indies Select made up of Philo Wallace, Clayton Lambert, Keith Arthurton, Otis Gibson, Robert Haynes and Ian Bishop, all of whom are playing in various leagues in England. Gibbons claimed 1-58 from eight overs.

Gibbons, batting at number six, then scored 33 not out as the West Indies Select fell just short of their target, replying with 299-9 with Wallace scoring 62 and Arthurton 58. Gibbons had a stand of more than 40 with Arthurton.

Gibbons, who has also played three matches for his English club Wycombe since returning from Bermuda (scoring 21, 3 and 86 not out), departed that same night for Hong Kong with the World Select team of which he is captain. They played two matches last week, beating an Indian under 25 team by five wickets on Tuesday and the Hong Kong national team on Wednesday.

The under-25s scored 273-4 with Gibbons taking two for 49 off 10 overs and then hitting 101 not out as his team replied with 276-5. Former Indian Test batsman Atul Wassan scored 58.

The next day the World Select beat Hong Kong, the same team that beat Bermuda in the ICC Tournament, by six wickets. Made up predominantly of players from Australia and New Zealand, Hong Kong were dismissed for 182 and the World Select replied with 183-4.

Gibbons scored 17 while former Indian opener Navjot Sidhu led the way with 114 not out.

"The majority of the guys don't believe I can't make my team in Bermuda,'' said Gibbons in reference to his inability to make Bay's league team.

"Steve Tikolo of Kenya can't believe I'm not still playing for Bermuda. In fact the whole team can't believe it. They say if there are that many players in Bermuda better than me than Bermuda should be a lot better than they are.'' When the World team departs for Singapore on Monday, Gibbons and two other members of the team will head to Melbourne, Australia to take an advanced coaching course. The trio will rejoin the team for the last stop of the tour -- Fiji -- next week. They return to England on August 5.
