Windies legend back to oversee Cup Match
Newly appointed ICC Cricket Committee chairman and West Indies Test legend Clive Lloyd is due to arrive in Bermuda sometime over the next few days to act as match commissioner in this year's Cup Match at Somerset Cricket Club.
The 63-year-old Guyanese has been involved in the annual mid-summer spectacle for the past two years after measures were put in place to avoid a repeat of the shenanigans that overshadowed St. George's' narrow victory over rivals Somerset at Wellington Oval in 2005.
Tempers flared in that match as St.George's closed in on a nailbiting 21-run victory when players from opposing sides had to be separated and St. George's' colt George O'Brien jr landed a blow to the helmet of Somerset batsman Stephen Outerbridge who allegedly spat at the fiery fast bowler.
Ex-Lancashire all-rounder Lloyd, who captained the Windies to World Cup glory in 1975 and again in 1979, made his Test debut against India in 1966 and went on to pile up 7,515 runs at an average of 46.67.
He hit 19 centuries, including a memorable 102 off 85 balls in the inaugural World Cup final that powered the Windies to a slim 17-run victory over Australia at Lords.
Earlier this month Lloyd was appointed chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee after former India Test batsman Sunil Gavaskar resigned.
Meanwhile, local umpires Roger Dill, Steven Douglas and Richard Austin are among the front runners expected to get the nod to officiate the game.
Dill and Douglas currently serve on the ICC Associate Region Elite panels while Austin was among three local umpires who successfully completed written and oral West Indies Cricket Umpires Association (WICUA) exams earlier this year.
