India striker Fredy raring to go
Former India international Fredy Mascarenhas is hoping to make his mark on Bermuda football this season his first full campaign since migrating to the Island in 2009.The 31-year-old joined Robin Hood midway through last season, playing a handful of matches for Robin Hood last term and impressing with his neat touches and clever interplay. And with a full pre-season under his belt, the powerful striker has set his sights forging a formidable strike partnership with new signing Antwan Russell, a combination he believes will frighten most top flight defences.“Antwan Russell is an international and so to play alongside him will be useful for me. We will work together and hopefully both score lots of goals this season,” said Mascarenhas, who picked up a slight injury in training but should be fit for Hood’s opening game at Somerset Trojans.“I’m looking forward to the season, playing some matches and hopefully things will work out for me.”Mascarenhas, who played for East Bengal and Sporting Clube de Goa in the I-League, believes Hood could surprise a few people this season and is looking forward to picking the brains of his new coach, Kyle Lightbourne.“It’s my pleasure to work with someone like Kyle Lightbourne who has played the game at a high level in England,” said Mascarenhas. “I think he will be able to improve my game and I will learn a lot from him.“I’ve played professional for a very long time in India, so I have some experience behind me, and I don’t feel under pressure on anything.“We will be trying our level best to go for the title, however, as we have some good players and I believe there a few additions still to come.”Mascarenhas admits he misses the life of a professional footballer and suspects he made a rash decision to controversially quit Indian football because of “political reasons”.“People in India see that I’m back playing football and they’re very happy for me. I still get people from India call me up and ask me to go back and play for Indian clubs,” he said.“India football is improving and we recently beat Cameroon in the Nehru Cup which was a very big achievement.“I do miss playing for my national team; sometimes I think I maybe made a bad hasty decision to leave Indian football.“There were some controversies and politics going on and that was why I left Indian football.“I’m thankful to be in Bermuda, though, and my boss at Bright Brigade has been very supportive of me so I able to play in matches.”
