Belgium-bound DeGraff looks to impress scouts

Sammy DeGraff's pursuit of professional football will take him to Belgium after being chosen for a select team run by an British football agency with close links to Kyle Lightbourne.

DeGraff, 27, impressed coaches from Professional Soccer Consulting (PSC) during a recent trial in Orlando, Florida, and now hopes to catch the eye of talent scouts in Europe later this month.

The select side will play up to two matches against Belgium First and Second Division teams and will be made up of United Soccer Leagues (USL) and English-based players. With an open trial at Major League Soccer (MLS) club Kansas City Wizards also on the horizon, DeGraff is praying both routes into the professional game will not clash with each other.

"I'm plan to go to the US for the Wizards trial and then head to Belgium with the select team," said DeGraff, who turned down an offer to join Brazilian team E.C Sao Jose for pre-season training for financial reasons.

"If there was a clash between the two I'd opt for the Belgium tour as I believe that will give me the most exposure."

Professional Soccer Consulting was established ex-Sheffield Wednesday and York City player Paul Taylor, who was the Director of Football of Lightbourne's former club Walsall FC.

Bermuda Hogges coach Lightbourne has firm ties with the BSC and has given DeGraff some encouraging words of advice ahead of his European adventure.

"There are a lot of soccer agencies out there selling players dreams so I take comfort from the fact Kyle Lightbourne has links with them," said DeGraff. "I count Kyle as a friend and both him and Shaun Goater have given me some instrumental advice.

"I did a lot of research into this and at the very least it will be another great experience for me - I've never been to Belgium."

He added: "I was pleased with the way I performed at the trial. There were quite a few USL players and European guys who turned up. I had no problems in terms of the skill level but it was quite a intense."

DeGraff, who was part of Bermuda's World Cup and Digicel Cup qualifiers last year, said he planned to play for the Hogges if nothing materialised from his overseas tryouts.

The North Village midfielder spent three months in Brazil and Uruguay late last year training with professional clubs.
