Second Division have been dashed, local coach Jon Beard confirmed yesterday.

Beard said that Bermudian Kyle Lightbourne's club were still interested in making a trip to Bermuda before the start of next season and that remained a possibility.

"They are still interested in coming on a pre-season tour and we will have to see how it fits in with everything else, like the Olympic qualifier,'' said Beard who was working as the local contact, trying to put the tour together.

Walsall were hoping to arrive in Bermuda this weekend for a stay of about five days and would have played at least one match.

"British Airways and the Palmetto Bay Hotel were very helpful but in the end we were unable to get it all organised,'' said Beard.

BGA scrap ladies event GLF While the Bermuda Men's Senior Golf Championships get underway at Belmont today with a field of 32, there will be no ladies' championship for the third time in six years.

Just four women signed up for the event, which is open to players over the age of 50, forcing Bermuda Golf Association secretary Tom Smith to cancel the 54-hole tournament.

The same event was also scrapped in 1990 and 1993 because of the lack of entries.

The BGA's monthly medal, for which points can be earned for the newly-introduced Order of Merit, takes place at Belmont this Saturday. Entries should be called into the secretary on 238-1367.

The new Amstel League season is due to get underway on Saturday, June 3 with the A Division playing at Ocean View and the B Division at Belmont.

Team captains are required to call in their teams to the BGA secretary before Tuesday, May 30.

Entry deadline for Bermuda's next major event, the Bermuda Amateur Strokeplay (men's and women's) at Port Royal from June 16 to June 19, is set at June 2.

So far 15 local and four overseas players have registered.

Race director Cal Simons is hoping for a quality field having taken over organisation of the race after it appeared in danger of cancellation.

"I'm hoping runners such as Kavin (Smith) and Brett (Forgesson) will turn out. It's always been a popular race and we want to see it continue to flourish,'' said Simons yesterday.

Runners are reminded that no late entries will be accepted. All entry forms have to be returned to the Pro Shop or Sportseller in Hamilton by 5.00 p.m.

Thursday.

Sunday's race, starting near the Clocktower at 9.30 a.m., will be preceded by an event for walkers at 9.00.

Prizes will include a special Mother's Day award and some $700 in gift vouchers.
