Castle in early call for discipline

after four showed up for the season-opener against BAA on Sunday without player registration cards.

And with three of them expected to start the match, Castle was forced to make late changes in his first match in charge. BAA duly responded by hammering their opponents 4-0.

"It definitely wasn't a good introduction into the Second Division,'' Castle said yesterday. "The players have got to knuckle down and take things serious.'' Except for a decade ago when Castle went down to the Second Division with PHC as a player, he has spent all of his time in the First Division. Coaching in the Second Division has provided him with a new challenge, but so far he has no regrets.

"This is completely new for me, from dealing with both First Division and Second Division players,'' Castle admitted. "This is going to take a little sorting out but once we're on the right track I'm sure we can go a long way.

There is a lot of ability.'' Castle said there was no excuse for players not having had new ID photos taken at the BFA office in preparation of the new season.

"I've gone down there and have had to make a number of changes in the way they prepare for games,'' said the new coach. "It's a learning experience.

"Players have got to be more dedicated and take the game more serious.

Players are not as dedicated as 10 years ago. They're a good bunch but need a little more discipline.'' Despite the absence of key players, including the experienced Dion Wainwright who is suspended, Castle was still surprised at the margin of Sunday's loss.

Wolves are tipped as one of the favourites for promotion.

"After the second goal the players put their heads down,'' he explained.

"I'm still looking for a real leader without Dion who is still suspended until the end of the month.

"This is definitely a challenge. So far, in the time I've been down here, it's been really good. The guys have been responsive to me. The little changes I've made everybody has accepted.

"It's the bottom of the ladder and the only way we can go now is up.'' Bermudian striker Kyle Lightbourne notched his first Third Division goal for new club Walsall on Saturday -- and also played a hand in the third -- but they still failed in search of an elusive first win at home this season.

Walsall had to settle for a 3-3 draw with Hereford, the former club of Meshach Wade and Kentoine Jennings, after the visitors scored an equaliser in the last minute of the game.

Lightbourne's strike in the 57th minute was a low, hard shot from a sharp angle following a corner and made it 1-1. Hereford went ahead 2-1 before Walsall replied to make it 2-2.

A good run down the right side by Lightbourne set up what was thought to be the Walsall winner from a header when he took on two players and crossed the ball with his right foot.

"We've just been letting in late goals since the beginning of the season,'' said Lightbourne last night. "That has happened on about five occasions in games we've either drawn or lost. We would have been in fifth place if we had won, but now we're 11th.'' Lightbourne made his debut for Walsall by coming on as sub in the last 10 minutes of last weekend's match against Darlington.

An injury to Everett Wright prior to the Autoglass Trophy match against Hereford in midweek last week enabled Lightbourne to start his first match.

They lost the away match 1-0 though Lightbourne said he almost scored with a header on his full debut.

"In my first two full games I think I did quite well,'' said the Bermudian.

"We play Gillingham at home on Saturday and I'm looking forward to it now that I've got my first goal. I feel pretty confident because I've been here from the start of the season. It's different that at Scarborough when I went there halfway through the season.'' Lightbourne is one of seven black players at the club, with four usually in the starting team including the goalkeeper and the entire front line, which also includes Rodney McDonald (five goals) and Wright who has four goals.'' Lightbourne is hoping to keep his place in the Walsall team for the meeting with his former club, Scarborough, on October 23.
