BERMUDA'S REPLY

JONES GOES AND BERMUDA ARE ALL OUT FOR 156!

India bring back Kumble from the pavilion end and he immediately traps Jones lbw with Bermuda on 156 - just one run shy of the 157 target. Bermuda have therefore suffered the biggest ever World Cup defeat, right on the back of the second-biggest that they received at the hands of Sri Lanka. Hemp finished on 76 not out - a fine innings which he will treasure, despite the defeat.

That's all from the Queen's Park Oval. Once again Bermuda have been annihilated by far superior opposition. Malachi Jones' wicket with his first ball of the World Cup will live long in the memory while Hemp's determined innings stopped the beating being even more severe. India's batsmen did the early damage and their bowlers were rarely troubled. There were two World Cup records in this match. The highest ever individual score by a side (413) and the biggest ever margin of defeat (257). Brutal.

See the Gazette website later for a short match summary and tomorrow's paper for comprehensive reports and analysis.

LEVEROCK GOES!

Six runs of the 50 partnership, Sluggo edges Tendulkar behind to the wicket-keeper to depart for nine. A good innings from Leverock in the circumstances offering good support to Hemp. Shame. Bermuda require three more for that magic 157! Malachi Jones in.

Hemp and Sluggo have just broken the highest-ever ninth wicket stand for Bermuda in an ODI with a dogged partnership of 37 off 44 balls. The previous best was 27 by Kevin Hurdle and Ryan Steede. Hemp is being the aggressor of course and Leverock is stone-walling everything - but that's his job. There's no doubt about the result, but this Bermudian duo are showing some admirable fight by making India wait longer than they would want to to get off the field.

They now need 10 more runs to avoid the biggest ever margin of defeat in World Cup history. Come on boys!

Bermuda have just had their best over of the match, with 11 coming off Anil Kumble. To avoid the biggest ever defeat in World Cup history, Bermuda must reach 157. with only two wickets in hand, that might be a tough ask...

With light fading slightly here at the Queen's Park Oval, Dwayne Leverock is in and is having every shot cheered by the fans of both sides. He even ran a decidely pacy two with Hemp not long ago, which was replayed endlessly by the television and elicited a huge roar from the stands. Maybe you could say they're laughing at him, but it's all in good fun and he manages to smile about it. Anyway, he needs a little run with the bat after going for 90-odd his 10-over bowling spell.

Fantastic stuff Hempy! Amid all the carnage around him, Glamorgan's captain has stood firm, his excellent 50 coming off 70 balls. He's been under pressure, having not really delivered in the limited-overs game since he joined the team in November last year, but he's come good against the very best which is the sign of a class act. He takes off his helmet to acknowledge the applause. What a great moment. In the twilight of his professional career, to score a World Cup fifty is a real highlight. He started well, has played and missed quite a few times, but stuck at it and deserves the ovation.

But.....

HURDLE GOES!

New-man Kevin Hurdle is bowled all ends up by Agarkar and Bermuda are now on the way out. At least they got passed the 100-mark thanks to Hemp, but they really should be capable of batting beyond 40 overs

After 29.5 overs

Hemp: 49

Hurdle: 0

Run rate: 3.62

CANN GONE!

Off only his second ball, new-man Lionel Cann attempts hook shot off a Agarkar bouncer and spoons it to cover. Uthappa dives forward at cover to take the catch, but there's plenty of doubt in the press box as to whether it carried magnified replays say no.

After 29.4 overs

MINORS OUT!

Oh no. Having played so well, Minors then gives it away by chipping Agarkar tamely to mid-on for 21. In just the previous over he whipped the same bowler off his legs for a magnificent six over square leg. Should have hung around for longer and the fall of his wicket brings Lionel Cann to the crease. Hemp one away from 50! Can he do it??

After 26 overs

Score: 89 for five

Hemp: 44

Minors: 9

Run rate:3.42

This is better! At one end you've got Minors grittily playing each ball on its merits and not worrying about the score, while at the other Hemp continues to play fluently, smashing Patel over cover twice during the course of the 23rd over. He still looks a bit loose outside that off stump if you ask me, but I guess even the best left-handers are vulnerable with the ball constantly being slanted across them.

Interestingly, the Indian bowlers have suddenly started to bowl bouncers at Hemp with a man back at deep square leg and a wide fine leg. They've obviously picked up on the fact that Hemp is a wonderful driver of the ball, but I cannot remember the last time I saw him play a hook or a pull shot. At the moment, Hemp is quite sensibly refusing to get suckered, and has ducked under all the short ones comfortably.

After 22 overs

Score: 64 for five

Hemp: 34

Minors: 5

While Bermuda's batsmen continue to fold like a pack of cards in a hurricane, David Hemp is soldiering on at the other end, currently 37 not out. What he needs now is for Minors or Cann to stick with him and hopefully he can drag Bermuda up to beyond the 100-mark with a fifty or higher. There's still plenty of time to bat. The game is gone, so they should really just be batting sensibly and look to use up as many overs they can. It's going to be a real battle, but as our regional rivals Canada showed agains England yesterday, an Associate nation can stand up to the big boys if you've got people in the team that relish the challenge. Unfortunately up to now, Bermuda's players have just not been able ot deliver.

As I write, DAvid Hemp has had a lucky escape after slashing one just over the head of second slip for four. He's got to be careful outside that off stump - he's a bit loose there sometimes.

The noise level remains low meanwhile. The TV occasionally flashes up shots of the Bermuda fans waving their flags and trying to convince everybody they're having a good time. But a mauling like this is very difficult to take, no matter how optimistic you might be.

JANEIRO CLEANED UP!

This is getting really embarrassing. Kumble is going to have a field day here. Having looked uncomfortable at the crease since his arrival, Tucker then missed a fairly innocous looking delivery and is bowled without troubling the scorers. Somebody please get stuck in, for goodness sake. I know Kumble is a very tricky bowler to face when you first come in, but somebody has got to show some guts and some fight rather than submitting every game with some pathetically meek batting. It was a pretty average shot from Tucker and he should be upset with himself.

ROMAINE ON HIS WAY BACK!

Leg spinner Anil Kumble was brought into the attack from the media centre end and immediately had Romaine in trouble with his fast leg breaks. The Bermuda skipper was then dismissed for his second-consecutive duck when he played all round a straight one and was trapped plumb lbw. The Bermuda skipper is in some kind of wretched form at the moment and a record defeat is very much on the cards now unless somebody produces something extraordinary.

After 15 overs

Score: 53 for three

Hemp: 25

Romaine: 0

BORDEN GOES!

Oh dear, when things go wrong they really go wrong. Borden's just been given out lbw of Munaf Patel when replays showed the ball was clearly going over the top of the stumps. The luck just isn't with Bermuda at this stage and it's a shame because Borden had played well for his 13. That's the second bad decision Bermuda have received today, if you factor in the third umpire not giving Yuvraj Singh out stumped when he hadn't got many. What a shame.

Meanwhile, with the shine coming off the new ball, batting is becoming a little easier out there and Hemp and Borden batted sensibly in their partnerhsip of 29.

One thing that is obvious though is that David Hemp is having some problems with his foot movement. Several times now he has been caught on the crease having gone neither forward nor back and he was very lucky to get away with one in 13th over when an attempted forcing shot on the leg side skewed off a leading edge and flew over the slips for four. He looks in reasonable touch, but he's got to get his feet moving if he's going to go on to a reasonable score. Saying that though, he's just smashed Agarkar over cover for a flat six, so maybe he doesn't have to move his feet to play well!

After ten overs

Score: 34 for two

Borden: 11

Hemp: 9

Run rate: 3.40

Hemp's come to the wicket and had immediately looked confident once again, bashing Agarkar through cover for a boundary. Now Hempy, you've got a long time to bat, nothing to lose and a decent wicket to bat on. It's time to live up to your billing.

India have got a short leg in for both batsmen - a rarity in limited-overs cricket, but I guess when you've got 400-plus on the board you can afford to be attacking! The crowd's very quiet at the moment. For the neutral I think the excitement has fizzled out of the game with the result not in doubt. The Bermuda fans don't have much to shout about really, but it's now up to the senior batsmen to get stuck in and bat for as long as possible. So what if we only get 170? Bat out the overs or get close to doing that and the experience will have been a valuable one for Bermuda's players. Get rolled over again inside 30 overs, and one wonders what positives we will possibly be able to take from this World Cup adventure.

OUTERBRIDGE GONE!

Having looked solid during his brief innings, Outerbridge is then bowled by a decent delivery from Khan which nipped back at him from outside off stump. Bermuda in trouble once again as Hemp strides to the wicket at number four. On course for another world record at this rate - this time the biggest ever defeat in World Cup history.

After five overs

Score:11 for one

The players came back out on the field after only about a ten minute break for rain. Both Outerbridge and Borden are being placed under a huge amount of pressure by the Indian openers, who are both making the ball talk in the swing and seam friendly conditions.

After two overs, play suspended due to rain

Score:9 for 1

Borden: 6

Outerbridge: 2

Run rate: 2.66

Oh dear. Bermuda are put under almost immediate pressure when OJ Pitcher is bowled by the left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan. Ball jagged back quite a bit off the seam and went between Pitcher's bat and pad. A good ball but also a slightly faulty technique.

A light drizzle is currently falling at the ground and after about ten minutes of gritting their teeth the umpires eventually decided to take the players off the park. Bermuda need to bat for 20 overs in order for the game to count. Otherwise, the two teams only get one point each. Wouldn't it be funny if Bermuda were somehow to emerge from this encounter with a point, having first conceded a world-record score! Unlikely to happen admittedly, as the rain looks to be nothing more than a passing shower. At any rate, Logie would probably more interested in getting his batsmen out there to face the music for the experience, but it wouldn't be surprising if there were a few supporters in the stands performing a rain-dance!

There is still a healthy cloud cover though, and as expected the Indian opening attack of Khan and Agit Agarkar have been getting plenty of early movement. Logie has sent in Delyone Borden at number three, no doubt to give the youngster some experience against a world-class side.

The reply begins

The Bermudian openers have walked out to the centre, and as expected I'm afraid, they've gone with combination of OJ Pitcher and Stephen Outerbridge. Would have been nice to see Lionel Cann out there, but Gus Logie has decided to stick with the orginal game plan.

They just have to bat in excess of 40 overs if this game is not to turn into one of the biggest embarrassments in the history of the World Cup...
