Hogges suffer blow as defender Wilson departs

Robert Wilson has been released from his Bermuda Hogges contract with the versatile defender unable to commit fully to senior football because of personal reasons.

No immediate plans have been made by the Hogges to replace the North Village Rams stopper, whose surprise departure was described as a "real blow" by Shaun Goater.

The franchise president said the door would be left open for Wilson to make a return to the Hogges if, and when, he felt able to make the required commitment.

"Robert Wilson has requested to leave the Hogges due to personal reasons," said Goater.

"We respect his difficult decision and understand that he has issues to deal with at this juncture of his life.

"Robert has the correct attitude, showed plenty of effort and has the ability to play at this level.

"It's a real blow for us because Robert performed very well for us last season and vastly improved as a player.

"We have no plans to replace him at the moment and are still happy with our squad. No one particular comes to mind who we would want to fill Robert's void."

Wilson was a regular for the Hogges last season and started in central defence alongside newcomer Kofi Dill during their 6-0 defeat against Charlotte Eagles in the opening game of the current campaign.

Another notable absentee from the Hogges squad for tonight's match against USL-D2 new boys Pittsburgh Riverhounds will be midfield schemer Jemeiko Jennings.

Goater confirmed that Jennings would play no part in the match having not attended training this week.

Mystery now surrounds Jennings' future with the pro-outfit with rumours circulating that he is eyeing up a return to Island Soccer League (ISL) team the Royal.

Jennings turned out for Meshach Wade's the Royal last season and was drafted by them again earlier this summer before agreeing to sign terms with the Hogges.

Goater said: "Jemeiko has not been at training this week and both myself, Kyle (Lightbourne) or Paul (Scope) have been unable to contact him. We are looking to have some dialogue with him and as a result he will play no part in our match against Riverhounds."

The Hogges will have an embarrassment of attacking riches at their disposal for today's match with both John Barry Nusum and fit again Ralph Bean available.

Both players missed Hogges' 2-0 victory over Wilmington Hammerheads a fortnight ago, Nusum through commitments with Philadelphia Kixx and Bean who was injured against Eagles.

"We're delighted John and Ralph are back onboard, said Goater.

"They've both looked very sharp in training and we've plenty of options in attack now with the likes of Lloyd Holder and Keishen Bean."

Goater has warned against complacency following the team's impressive win against Hammerheads and pointed out that Riverhounds had picked up a couple of points in their previous two outings.

"We know Riverhounds will be no pushovers and they have drawn their last two games against Harrisburg City Islanders and Western Mass Pioneers."

Hogges take on Pittsburgh Riverhounds at the National Sports Centre at 7 p.m.
