Goater's incentive for goals

Shaun Goater will have an added incentive to hit the goal trail tomorrow against Bradford — strike partner Paulo Wanchope is waiting in the wings.

The Costa Rican has been sidelined for the past two months following a cartilage operation but came through a 45 minute reserve outing on Thursday with no repercussions.

As a result he has been named in the squad to face the Bantams tomorrow.

“Paulo will definitely be involved,” confirmed manager Kevin Keegan yesterday. “He will probably start on the bench. He had half a game last night and he is a very fit player. He is chomping at the bit.”

Goater and Wanchope were Keegan’s preferred choice up front prior to injury striking, but the gangly frontman has since been replaced by Darren Huckerby.

Although the former Coventry man started slowly, he has found the back of the net with regularity in recent weeks and has formed a more than decent partnership with the Bermudian.

That will give Keegan the kind of headache managers love — three fit and goal-hungry strikers and only two berths to fill.

Goater’s leading marksman status and the fact he has been made club captain will give him the edge for now, but if the goals dry up he knows the boss will not hesitate to change his team around.

Meanwhile, Eyal Berkovic, Danny Granville and Danny Tiatto are major worries for tomorrow. If all three fail to pass a late fitness test Keegan could turn to Chris Shuker and Paul Ritchie to plug the gaps.

[bul]After it was reported that Kyle Lightbourne had no chance of playing for Macclesfield this weekend after failing to get over his ankle injury, media reports suggest he may well be available for selection today.

The Third Division side take on Leyton Orient and Lightbourne will apparently figure in boss Dave Moss’ plans.

However, if he is fit he will probably have to make do with a place on the bench as he will find it difficult to displace the in-form Rickie Lambert and Lee Glover.
