Error hands X-Roads victory

X-Roads 1 Hamilton Parish 0

A shocking defensive error allowed X-Roads Warriors to emerge with a scrappy FA Cup first round victory over second-tier Hamilton Parish at Garrison Field yesterday.

X-Roads controlled most of the match, but they failed to make the most of it through poor shooting and a forward line that to link up.

Parish fared no better, as they struggled to sustain any form of forward momentum.

X-Roads notched the lone goal of the game in the sixteenth minute when danger man Donavan Thompson was gifted a run on goal by an errant back-pass by midfielder Kaiya Darrell. Thompson swooped in and rounded goalkeeper Nigel Burgess to slot into the open net.

Although Parish absorbed repeated raids on their goal, they were able occasionally to mount their own assaults, but their efforts went begging owing to a lack of cutting edge.

With the game going back and forth, both teams tried desperately to seize the upper hand. Thompson was guilty of missing a plethora of chances to give the Warriors some breathing room.

Former Bermuda striker Irving Burgess played a staring role up front for Parish in an attempt to wind back the clock. He injected some early punch and excitement, but had precious little support.

In the 85th minute, a last chance at an equaliser came and went when Darrell’s powerful header from a corner sailed just inches over the crossbar.
