EXTRA BAGGAGE?

Linda Dini Jenkins is the kind of traveller who always likes to know where her underwear is. Her Bermudian husband, Tim, is more the type to go off with only a toothbrush and a map in his back pocket.

That hasn't stopped them travelling together and in ten years they have been to Italy, Belgium, France and Bermuda, among other places.

Mrs. Jenkins has recorded her sometimes comedic travels in a book called 'Up At The Villa — Travels with My Husband', published by her own publishing label 'Great Little Books LLC'.

"We started travelling about ten years ago," said Mrs. Jenkins. "We made a trip to Paris and Bruges, Belgium.

"I am a much saner traveller than he is. That is one of the conflicts that arises in the book. But he is a more experienced traveller than I am."

Mr. Jenkins gained travel experience while working as an investment manager.

"When he graduated from college he worked for Butterfield Bank in Bermuda as a trust officer for nine years," said Mrs. Jenkins. "He moved to the United States where we met."

While working in Boston, Massachusetts, Mr. Jenkins had to travel a lot, particularly to Japan.

Mr. Jenkins' grandparents lived in Bermuda just after the Second World War. His grandfather, Horace Fitz-Patrick, worked on the Currency Board and Mrs. Fitz-Patrick did some decorating work around the Island.

"Tim is my muse," Mrs. Jenkins said. "I write about our time together. He is the one who holds both British and American passports. He is from New Jersey, originally, but has Bermuda status from working here for nine years. We now live outside of Richmond, Virginia."

'Up At The Villa' includes stories about the Jenkins' visits to Bermuda.

"The book is a mixed genre book — true stories, practical tips and lessons from the road," Mrs. Jenkins said.

She said she is primarily a poet.

"That is where my career started," Mrs. Jenkins said. "There are several poems in the book. There is some guide book information in the back which looks at my favourite cities in Italy. I like Lucca, Sorrento, Padova, anywhere there's great food!

"There is some advice if you are travelling with a group you put together yourself."

The Jenkins love to rent villas and share them with several other couples.

"It is an affordable way to travel," she said. "It is a great way to learn about the immediate environment you find yourself in.

"It is also filled with opportunities for things to go wrong, which is fodder for my writing. There are some funny dos and don'ts in the book."

She said the book contains one poem and story about Bermuda.

"My husband's aunt and uncle rent a place in Bermuda every August to September. The poem in the book is called 'Rock Happy' after a house they stayed in Southampton."

She said the piece about Bermuda is a reverie about a wonderful experience they had a dozen years ago.

"We were walking below Mid- Ocean Club," she said. "We heard this sound and found it was a man working on his boat. He was scraping the bottom of this old netting dingy."

Mrs. Jenkins and several business partners started book publisher 'Great Little Books LLC' three years ago.

"We knew when we started in 2006 that we were walking into an uncertain economy," she said. "We are becoming a hybrid company where authors pay us for the printing and design of their books.

"We have a distributor in New York City that gets the books into all of the major cities. Our books are sold like any other traditional book.

"Next May we will release our fourth book."

She said their goal was to become a traditional publisher in the near future.

Mrs. Jenkins' first book was jcalled 'Journey of a Returning Christian — Writing into God'.

"It is a short, religious book mostly poetry, but some essays," she said.

It was published by Chalice Press in St. Louis in 1994. It looked at Bible stories from a female and modern day point of view.

"It tells the story of my journey back to the church," said Mrs. Jenkins. "I left it in college, like a lot of people."

She started her career in advertising, but has been working as a freelance writer for about twenty years.

Mrs. Jenkins will be signing books today at the Bookmart at Brown & Company at 2 p.m.
