Harold Millett’s marathon tenure as Eastern Counties Cricket Association (ECCA) president has come to an end.ICC-certified umpire Steven Douglas succeeded the former St David’s cricketer as president during the association’s annual general meeting last week.Millett, who had been at the helm of the ECCA for more than two decades, did not seek re-election.Reflecting upon his time at the top, Millet said: “Overall, this has been a great experience and journey for me and for all of the four clubs (Bailey’s Bay, St David’s, Cleveland and Flatts).“I think we made progress during my tenure in the sense that the year-about (annual venue change) has been successful and the format change that came into being where you now have the overs (70-48) distribution. I think that has enhanced the game, meaning the champions can no longer dominate.”Millett reckoned the ECCA is in “good hands” with top umpire Douglas at the helm.“I have no doubt about Steven’s ability because he has many, many years of experience with the association,” he said. “I feel the association is still in good hands for the future.“I think the Counties is in a good state and there are many goals the association has in the fire. But there’s still a lot of work to be done.”When asked whether he had any regrets relinquishing leadership, Millett replied: “I will miss the camaraderie of the club representatives.“There are a few things my wife (Juanita) and I will be enjoying during the days that lie ahead. And I’m sure she is happy to know that I no longer plan my vacation on and around County Cup.”Millett admitted that St David’s’ two-year boycott proved to be one of the low points of his time as president. The Islanders withdrew from the competition as cup holders in 2010 in protest of a number of grievances with the ECCA, including the allocation of revenue from the competition among the association’s members.“I guess you could say that was the lowest point, to lose an affiliate on such a scale or see a champion decline the opportunity to defend their title,” Millett said. “But they are now back and so I thought it would be a good time to step down with the family back together.”The remaining ECCA executive consists of vice-president John Carey, secretary Terlena Murphy, assistant secretary Cleo Richardson, treasurer Alton Caisey and the 16 representatives (four from each of the association’s members).Newly elected president Douglas couldn’t be reached for comment last night. This year’s Eastern Counties competition gets underway on July 21 at Sea Breeze Oval where holders and hosts Bailey’s Bay will rest their title on the line against Flatts in the first round. The eventual first round winner will face St David’s in the second round on August 18 to battle for the right to meet Cleveland County in the final round on September 1.
