SailGP organisers will meet with local agencies today to discuss how Government’s tightening of Covid-19 restrictions will affect the training schedules of the competing crews.

David Burt, the Premier, announced last night that Bermuda will return to a stay-at-home policy from 5am tomorrow for at least seven days due to the spike in Covid-19 cases on the island.

In response to the Premier’s announcement, a SailGP spokeswoman told The Royal Gazette last night: “In light of the Bermuda Government's tightening of Covid restrictions announced this evening, we have follow-up meetings with the relevant local agencies tomorrow to discuss the implications to SailGP's planned training schedule during the seven-day Stay at Home Order.

“Until then we cannot comment further on what this means for SailGP's operations during that time frame.”

This month’s inaugural Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess is due to be held on April 24 and 25 in the Great Sound.

Teams are arriving in Bermuda to train, with each team operating in a closed bubble, with all athletes and staff wearing PPE at all times, social distancing, and being tested regularly.

According to Denmark skipper Nicolai Sehested, whose team started training earlier this month: “Movement is tightly restricted to the event venue and the hotel.

“SailGP and the local authorities have put in place extremely stringent Covid-19 procedures to allow this event to take place.”

Health minister Kim Wilson said 118 positive cases had been recorded over the weekend with 64 being recorded on Saturday and 54 yesterday.

This brought the total number of active cases to 877, of whom 36 were in hospital and six remained in critical care.

There were also two deaths over the weekend, bringing the total number to 16.
