Residents to discuss Daniels' Head future

An action group will meet tomorrow to work out ways of saving a former base for the community.

Earlier this week the Bermuda Land Development Company (BLDC) announced no-one had bid successfully to develop Daniel's Head.

Now the Sandys Action Group will meet to consider its next step in the campaign to turn the area into a community centre.

Group co-chairman Cordell Brangman said: "With this latest news about Daniel's Head I see a little hope. We will discuss it at our meeting on Saturday.'' BLDC on Wednesday that it had rejected the one application for Daniel's Head, put in by an overseas investor, because it proposed too much housing and did not comply with the brief for the area.

BLDC chairman Vincent Ingham said Daniel's Head's future would now be reviewed, with different groups and committees taking part in the process.

Florida-based Grand Reserve Spa Associates submitted the plan for Daniel's Head. Yesterday its principal, Dr. Murray Klauber, was not available to comment on the unsuccessful bid.

In the past residents had protested for access to the beach area at Daniel's Head.

Mr. Brangman said the Action Group had submitted its own proposals for the area some time ago and claimed Government had not allowed its plan to be presented.

"We could make some headway now,'' he added. "There is no guarantee Government will look at our plan, but we would like the public to see it and we would like a chance to submit our development plan.

"My idea is that it could be used like Admiralty House where everyone in the community gets a chance to use the area. However we will discuss all this at our meeting.'' The BLDC also announced on Wednesday that just two companies -- BEAM and the Morgan's Harbour Investment Partnership -- were now in the running to develop Morgan's Point.

Both plans include developing a marina, hotel, golf course, homes, parks and public spaces on the former Annex.

A decision is likely to be made on the successful bidder for Morgan's Point in the New Year.

Last night Edward Lawrence, who is one of the principles in the Morgan's Harbour Investment Partnership, said: "You always hope for the best for your own group and we have put an awful lot of effort and money into it and we feel we have the best project.'' Mr. Lawrence, president and owner of Kaissa Ltd., declined to comment in detail on the scheme as the project was still in its tendering phase.

He added: "We are very pleased at being chosen for the next level, it is serious now. It is a big project and there will be a lot of good spin-offs for Bermuda.'' BEAM president Alan Burland said he was extremely pleased his group was a finalist and said he was looking forward to the next stage of the selection process.

Mr. Burland, who is president of BCM McAlpine, added: "We have been working on this for about three and a half years and there is a lot at stake.

"It is rare to get a chance to do something that is of such potential assistance to Bermuda's long-term well-being.''
