Basden and Steede flash Cup warning
President's XI 155-0 Five bowlers in the Vice Presdent's XI pushing for places in Somerset's Cup Match team failed to advance their claims after captain Dexter Basden and Albert Steede blasted 155 in this trial match on Saturday.
The target proved easy for the two batsmen, with Basden hitting 50 and Steede reaching 1,000 runs for the season during his knock of 85.
None of the bowlers used by captain Shannon Warner bowled more than six overs, with Chris Caisey giving up 25 in six overs while bowling the only maiden of the innings, and spinner Johnny Richardson (Cleveland) going for 31 off six overs.
Warwick's Allan Wilkinson bowled five overs for 22 runs and Kevin Fubler of Cleveland four overs for 16 runs. Garry Williams of Southampton was the most expensive of the bowlers, conceding 36 runs off five overs with the new ball.
Earlier, Jeff Richardson, a certainty for selection, led the Vice President's batting with 80 of which 68 came in boundaries from 14 fours and two sixes.
Former captain Andre Manders, seeking to reclaim a spot after being dropped last year, scored 15 at number three while tailender Wilkinson was the only other batsman in double figures, scoring 11 not out.
Paceman Roger Blades and spinner Hasan Durham were the pick of the President's XI bowlers, Blades taking three for 43 off 9.1 overs and Durham three for 17 off six while Quinton Burch had figures of two for 34 off eight. Steven Brown and Del Hollis took one each from seven and six overs respectively.
