Island's Davis Cup hopes in the balance

Bermuda's Davis Cup fortunes were left delicately in the balance last night after they won their fixture against Barbados, though the doubles match between the two teams was suspended because of rain.

When play was called off around 9.30 p.m., Bermuda needed two more games to secure a victory as they were ahead 4-2 in the third and deciding set.

The first two sets were split with Bermuda's James Collieson and Jenson Bascome surging ahead 7-5 in the first, only for the Barbadian combination of Damien Applewhaite and Haydn Lewis to bounce back 6-7 in the second set. This was after the Bermudians let the advantage slip, yet again, in this tournament after rushing to a 5-1 lead in the tie-breaker.

Bermuda will be looking to close out this match today, thus completing a 3-0 triumph against the Barbadians whom they had already beaten in both singles matches yesterday morning at the International Tennis Centre in St. Vincent.

Bascome shrugged off flu-like symptoms to beat Jonathan Lewis 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 and Collieson followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Applewhaite.

This win kept alive Bermuda's hopes of graduating from Americas Zone Group Four and coach Steve Bean and his entourage went to bed knowing they have all to play for in today's final face-off against the unbeaten Bolivians who have already secured promotion to Group Three.

"We still have a chance of promotion. It depends on what happens with St. Lucia. If they lose and we beat Bolivia we will go up into Group Three. They (St. Lucia) will have had two losses.

"Playing Bolivia will be so tough but it's not impossible. Our players have got acclimatised to some extent and they realise they have to go all the way and they want to do it," said Bean, adding that they have no experience against the Bolivians as that country has brought a new squad of players this year.

Bascome and Collieson will each play a singles match this morning against Bolivia before concluding the doubles match against Barbados.

Bermuda's Davis Cup campaign will close with doubles at 6.30 p.m. against Bolivia. Meanwhile, St. Lucia will oppose the US Virgin Islands.
