Cricket: Paget defy the odds for win

Without a win in four matches and with only one goal to their credit, Paget were not expected to offer much resistance at Wellington Oval against last season's relegated team. However, inspired by Social Club's recent win there, Paget also came away from the east end with three points after coming from behind to beat the former First Division leaders.

St. George's 1 Paget 2

Without a win in four matches and with only one goal to their credit, Paget were not expected to offer much resistance at Wellington Oval against last season's relegated team.

However, inspired by Social Club's recent win there, Paget also came away from the east end with three points after coming from behind to beat the former First Division leaders.

Sinclair Gibbons, back with St. George's on a late transfer after deciding against a move to Boulevard, struck the crossbar in the seventh minute before netting in the 13th minute to give the home team the lead.

But Paget came charging back with two goals late in the first half, first when Chris Anderson equalised for the visitors and then David Hunt, a late transfer, marked his first game of the season with what turned out to be the winner right before the half time whistle.

Late in the second half St. George's blew a chance of a share of the points when Brent Minors headed over the bar from almost on the goal line following a Neil Paynter freekick.

Hamilton Parish 3 St. David's 1

Two early goals by Clevon Hill and a third by Leon Raynor in the second-half saw leaders Hamilton Parish coast to victory at Lord's.

Hill floored the home team early by scoring the first after 11 minutes and the second six minutes later.

St. David's refused to lie down and fought back to make it 2-1 when O.J.Minors netted after 57 minutes, but the visitors responded three minutes later with Raynor getting the goal that put any St. David's revival to bed.

Hill was naturally the hero for Parish but defender Anthony Wilson helped steady the defence with a fine display at left full-back.

Prospect 3 Ireland Rangers 1

Vic Ball struck home two penalties and Carlos Lopes netted the third goal to give Prospect this surprise victory over second place Ireland Rangers at Police field.

Prospect, entering the day in sixth place, got on top of second placed Rangers early with Ball converting his first spot kick after ten minutes. His second came after 65 minutes while Lopes scored ten minutes later.

Southampton 0 Wolves 0

After 90 minutes of hard work on the pitch Southampton Rangers and Wolves had to settle for a share of the spoils after both teams failed to capitalise on a host of chances at Southampton Oval yesterday.

Attacking their guest from the outset Craig Smith should have given Rangers an early lead when he found himself free deep in Wolves' territory, but his shot from an acute angle trickled wide while at the other end Kenny Hill failed to convert on two-separate occasions. The veteran striker also received a booking in the first-half for a deliberate handball.

Herbie Dillas then threatened to break the deadlock shortly after the restart after he managed to get behind his marker. But instead of crossing to his team-mates waiting in the box the dreadlocked striker shot into the side-netting from a tight angle.

But Wolves also had their chances in the second half with veteran Dion Wainwright and Jared Peniston linking up well during one of their better moves forward. However, poor finishing would let them down again when second-half substitute Leon Ming shot miserably wide with an empty goal at his mercy after Peniston and Rangers' 'keeper Gerald Simons were involved in a collision while challenging for a loose ball.
