Exercise during lockdown is easy, as long as you commit
So we are back in lockdown.
If you were already active, especially if you were used to running, indoor cycling or going to the gym, the transition may not be as difficult as you think.
You can still workout – even without a physical gym – and, if you are willing to adopt the healthiest lifestyle that you can in these strange times, you will certainly feel the benefits.
I’ve already decided to treat this lockdown differently than the last. Nope, I won’t be perfect, but I aim to at least think with a healthier mindset. So maybe a little less baking breads and maybe a bit more steaming veggies. In turn I’ll have better sleep and a better mindset.
Here are my top tips on staying active during the lockdown.
1. Get social
Does exercise confuse you? Want to exercise but don’t have much time in between online lessons? Look no further than social media. Bermuda has so many trainers that have converted to an online platform. Check us out on Instagram and Facebook. There are so many to choose from – which means you can find the trainer that works best for you! You can find short, sharp workouts or longer ones. You can also search for hashtags that cater to a variety of fitness levels – from entry all the way up to challenging cardio workouts. No dumbbells? No worries. Tins of beans, water jugs, books, and other household items all feature as equipment alternatives. If you normally run with a group, arrange to do it at the same time in your various locations just to help you stay motivated.
2. Active housework
Haven’t had time to spring clean? Well now you do. Having to stay in so much, you’ll feel so much better in nice, clean surroundings. Window cleaning will help you lose 150 calories in 30 minutes; gardening for the same amount of time will set you back about 200 calories. Cleaning the whole house can be the equivalent of a 3 to 5-mile run!
Even better, crank up the music and make it fun. Not only will you feel better for making your place sparkle, but you’ll also feel great relaxing when you sit down and binge on Netflix.
3. Workouts on television
Instagram isn’t the only source for workouts. Exercise classes on TV are as much of a thing as the good old fashioned ones were back in the 80s and 90s. There are some good, old-school routines that can keep you just as fit as Zumba and HIIT. Put on a sweatband and some leg warmers and get moving in front of the TV for the authentic 80s experience.
4. Find that app
In these crazy times, of course there is an app for everything. There are so many to choose from that will keep you inspired and healthy. Apple Fitness is one. It has loads of instructor-led classes on everything from stretching to butt-burning HIIT workouts. If you want to spend a bit of money on equipment, there is of course the Peleton and other brands of spin bikes. Or for an equally effective, more budget-friendly option you can purchase a turbo trainer to turn your outdoor bike into a stationary one. Runners, walkers and cyclists can also enjoy variety without setting foot out of the house with apps like Zwift which offer varied and interesting virtual routes.
5. Virtual races
There is nothing quite like fresh air so, if we can, we should get outside. If you are new to running, try a brisk walk with interspersed five-minute jogs. Build up slowly. Put a bit of variety into your outside exercise by exploring a new route within your allowed radius. Try running fast and then running slow between two points (one pole to the next). For those with more experience, as all races are cancelled, there are plenty of virtual races to keep the motivation up. There’s nothing quite like having a goal to keep you going.
It can feel quite challenging to get going at first, but there is nothing like a routine to help. It will get better the more you do it. Routine is key, so make it a part of your day whether it’s ten minutes of stretching first thing in the morning or a 5k run on your lunch break.
