Party time? Make it so, say East End trekkies
The Ferengi from Queens wore Converse All-Stars. Black. At midnight they transported him warp-speed back to the starship Royal Majesty .
Just like a Ferengi; It was buffet time.
Captain's log. Stardate: Wednesday night. A few hundred serious Trekkies on a specialised cruise descended upon the old town for a night of Jim Beam-me-up libation and bumping elbows with actors.
Two pubs hosted, leaving fans and onlookers wandering betwixt looking for stellar bodies and those who shared their own, dare we say? madness.
For realism a tip of the visor went to the White Horse, which, calculating inflation rates into the next century offered a Star Trek "special'' -- a hot dog for $5.
Silly them. Were they not aware the mother ship was equipped with food replicators? Six squares a day and snacks.
Cruise Trek '95 "The Bermuda Discovery'' is the cre nme de la of Star Trek conventions. Enthusiasts were unanimous in their praise. Typical conventions, they said (and one sensed they had been to many), saw thousands ushered into halls for a quick speech by one of the cast followed by a file-past-the-star and barely enough time for a "live long and prosper''.
Ah, but sitting under the stars at the Wharf (pub not Klingon), having a cozy te ote-a-te ote with the lovely Vash (Jennifer Hetrick), well, that's downright intimate. Ahead full, Mr. Crusher! The White Horse saw the first action. A slight buzz as all seven or so feet of Carel Struycken wandered in. Hard not to notice the man who played Lurch in The Addams Family movies. In "The Next Generation'' Mr. Struycken plays valet to Deanna Troi's mom.
Slipping in virtually unnoticed (as is his way) with Mr. Struycken was Eric Menyuk, aka "The Traveler'' one of Generation's more original creations.
And standing quietly to one side, an appropriately haughty expression on his face, was the Vulcan Sarek, father of Spock; Mark Lenard, a fine actor with a long and varied c.v.
Sadly, none of the cruise passengers dressed for the event, leaving the local away-teams (led by the son of another ship captain) to add the colour, the zest.
The cruisers were obvious only by the plastic I.D. tags that hung from their belts and the way they orbited the stars, cameras clicking, names and histories of their heroes tripping effortlessly from their tongues.
One little fella' grew agitated when our photographer mistook a Cardassian for a Ferengi and then, upon correction, called that Ferengi "Quark''. Well, it was Nog (Max Grodenchik) wasn't it? How very embarrassing for all concerned.
Other luminaries included Andrew Robinson, a Cardassian and, in another role, the "punk'' to whom Clint Eastwood uttered his famous, "Do you feel lucky today?'' and Patti Yasatuke, who plays Nurse Alyssa Ogawa on "Next Generation''.
George Takei, who played Sulu on the original series and subsequent movies, was onboard but didn't partake in the Wednesday's festivities.
ACTORS Andrew Robinson and Jennifer Hetrick, the Cardassian Garak and the lovely Vash, Capt. Picard's heartthrob.
FERENG-HI! Local fans John Musson and Ann Symonds flank the Ferengi "Nog'' (Max Grodenchik).
