I back Nahki to score again
A lot of deals are usually done on transfer deadline day and Monday will see plenty of last minute scrambling throughout the European leagues. We in Bermuda are watching with particular interest to see if a big offer comes in for Bradford City striker Nahki Wells ... an offer too good for them to turn down as they have already insisted he is not for sale despite the reported £3 million Queens Park Rangers were prepared to offer. If nothing happens for him then he will stay at Bradford and continue to do what he’s been doing, scoring goals. Hopefully that will continue today when Bradford travel to meet Stevenage, a team I used to play against in the West Ham third team when they were a Conference or semi-pro team.Nahki is hot right now and I would back him to score against Stevenage. As a goalscorer you have to take the opportunities when they come because you are going to have highs and lows.It is not the end of the world if he doesn’t move up to a higher division right now. If he keeps scoring goals it will work out and it will help Bradford to get promoted again. You don’t want to jump at the first club that comes in for you, he’s got to make sure he goes to a club where he’s going to play every week. People have to understand that it is a big difference from playing in the division he is in now to playing in the Premier League. It’s going to be a lot harder but I think he has the capabilities if he is nurtured right. You’ve got to remember he’s 23 years old and you have some guys in the Premier League who already have a few years experience under their belt. I went to England in August 1968 and by the next September I was in the West Ham first team, but I was fortunate, I had coaches who believed in me and they gave me opportunities. But you have to have the ability because they are not going to put you in if they don’t think you can play.I was able to get in at 18 years old and the better kids in the Premier League get in at around 18, Wayne Rooney got in when he was 17. One player who is benefiting from moving to a new club is Liverpool’s striker Daniel Sturridge who at the present time is probably the best striker in England, he’s scoring goals left, right and centre. Lets hope it continues because I’ve always rated him, and liked him when he was at Manchester City. You knew he had the talent but was stifled a bit at Chelsea where he didn’t get enough playing time.I think he’s a brave boy to say ‘I want to play’ because too many players are content to pick up the money and sit on the bench. I couldn’t do that, I would want to play, and you have to take your hats off to players like that.Another player looking for more playing time is the former Swansea and Manchester City winger Scott Sinclair who has joined West Brom on a season-long loan with the possibility of a permanent move. He can play, Scott Sinclair, and I thought he made a boo-boo by going to City in the first place. He should have stayed at Swansea and developed his skills. I rate him as a good talent as well, it’s a good signing for West Brom and I see he is set to make his debut for them tomorrow against Swansea.England have to get their best young players playing in a regular basis. People like Gerrard and Lampard are going out, so what is going to happen when they go. If you look at results this year with the Under 21s, they struggled and that’s simply because a lot of the players don’t get Premiership football. In order to be a good footballing nation you kids have to be playing at the top level.Cardiff’s win last Sunday over Manchester City was a massive upset and if you had put your money on Cardiff City you would have won a hell of a lot of money. That’s the beauty of the game, that if you work hard you can get something out of the game. The game is played in the field, not in the newspapers or in the boardroom and if you are willing to work you can get something from it. Cardiff worked harder than City and defended better and played that old English game where they knocked balls into the box and the little fella Fraizer Campbell was able to get up and beat the defenders to score from two headers.Chelsea were happy to go to Manchester United and get a point and I’m sure Jose Mourinho was pleased with that. Let’s hope the Liverpool-Man United game this weekend is going to be a little more entertaining than Chelsea and Man United last week.
