Jamaica deports Bermudian man
A BERMUDIAN was fined J$25,600 (about US$380) and ordered to be deported from Jamaica this week after pleading guilty to trying to export marijuana from the country in the covers of two Jamaican cookbooks.According to the Jamaica Observer, last Friday Kamal Anees, 37, a housekeeper from Somerset, was about to board a flight to London’s Gatwick Airport when he was stopped by airport security officials and his black suitcase searched in his presence.
During the search, officials found two multi-coloured books titled Authentic Recipes from Jamaica *p(0,10,0,10.3,0,0,g)>and>Real Taste of Jamaica, which were both found to have compressed marijuana hidden in their covers.
Two pounds of the drug were seized during the search.
When Anees appeared in court on Tuesday, he was sentenced by presiding magistrate Judith Pusey to pay J$3,200 for possession of marijuana, J$6,400 for dealing in the drug and J$16,000 for taking steps to export it from Jamaica.
Should he fail to pay the fines, he will spend three months behind bars.
