Cyclist admits riding on Railway Trail

A tour operator was fined for riding his motorcycle on the Railway Trail, despite his protests that the Police gave him special permission to do so.

Waleces Young of Bandroom Lane, Pembroke, had to fork out $100 after admitting to disobeying a traffic sign by riding on the trail in Sandys.

Young, 48, who has been operating the business for six years, protested to Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that an Inspector from Somerset Police Station allowed him to do so in order to show visitors around.

"I was trying to tell the Police that if they get in touch with Somerset Police Station they can verify what I'm saying," he said.

However, he could not give the court the name of the Police officer in question and court officials told Mr. Tokunbo they could not verify the defendant's claim.

"This is a wild-goose chase," protested Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney.

Rather than have the matter adjourned for a week for further inquiries to be made, Young opted to pay the fine instead.

However, he told this newspaper after the hearing that he will take the issue up with the Police in the hope of getting his fine overturned.

"I have to have this dealt with. If I'm still going to be taking tourists, I don't want it to happen again," he remarked.
