High schools set for their first battle on the water

The Bermuda Sailing Association (BSA) will be holding the first ever High School Sailing Regatta tomorrow in Hamilton Harbour.Earlier this year the BSA was able to secure places for Bermuda high schools in the New England Schools Sailing Association, a district of the Interscholastic Sailing Association of the US.The majority of Bermuda’s youth sailors who attend school overseas are part of this league.Attending the regatta are Berkeley Institute, Bermuda High School, Mount St. Agnes, Saltus, Somersfield and Warwick Academy. Some of the Island’s top young sailors are competing including Owen Siese from Warwick Academy and Dimitri Stevens from the Berkeley Institute.A BSA spokesperson said: “The Bermuda Sailing Association hopes to see sailing become a regular sport on the high school schedule and already schools like Warwick, Somersfield and Saltus have sailing activities in existence.“However the emphasis of this initiative is on competition within the schools rather than individuals.“The intended goal is to open up sailing to a broader range of students by encouraging students otherwise unfamiliar with sailing at a competitive level to come out and support their school both on and off the water.“Both the RBYC and the RHADC have been supportive of this initiative and both hope to see more schools partaking in sailing within the club’s after school programmes.”Tomorrow’s regatta begins at 4pm and can be viewed from Albuoy’s Point.
