Arrest made in death of 67-year-old

A story in yesterday's paper incorrectly stated that the late Mrs. Maureen Parker was a long-time member of the Pilot's Club and that the club was the female branch of the Rotary Club. Mrs. Parker was a member of the Pilot Club of Hamilton, Bermuda, which has no affiliation with the Rotary Club.

Detectives investigating the death of an elderly woman yesterday said a 25-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Mrs. Maureen Parker, 67, was found dead last Wednesday morning at her home, on Middle Road. It is understood she had been suffocated. Police immediately sealed off the area and launched a hunt for the killer of the woman who lived alone and who was bedridden for the last few years of her life.

Yesterday, the Bermuda Police Service issued a statement saying a 25-year-old Paget man had been arrested late on Friday evening in connection with the death of Mrs. Parker.

He was arrested in Paget Parish by detectives. He is due to appear in Magistrate's Court sometime this week, Police said.

Mrs. Parker came to Bermuda about 50 years ago when she arrived from Canada and was the second wife of the late Mr. James Parker.

She was well known in the community - serving as the longtime secretary at the former Board of Trade. Before her illness, Mrs. Parker was an active member of the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

Mrs. Parker was also a long-time member of the Pilot's Club - the women's branch of the Rotary Club. She had no children.

Last night Chief Insp. George Jackson, who is leading the investigation, confirmed a man had been arrested in Paget Friday evening and would be appearing in court this week.

"Our inquiries into this matter are still on-going,'' he said.
