Daniel Augustus was left to rue squandering a golden opportunity to make a surge up the leaderboard during yesterday’s second round of the Pros Fore Pros Tour event at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Nevada.

The 33-year-old professional squandered several birdie attempts as he struggled with the putter during an up-and-down round at the par-72 layout.

“I hit plenty of greens and gave myself a lot of great looks, but didn’t really make anything,” Augustus told The Royal Gazette.

“I made probably one of the best par saves that I’ve made in a while, but at the same time I missed a lot of birdie opportunities that I had.”

Augustus was four over at the turn, having made three successive bogeys at holes 5, 6 and 7 and a double bogey at the par-four 9th hole.

He eventually found his groove coming in as he remained bogey-free on the back nine, which he played at one under after rattling in his second birdie of the round at the par-four 16th.

“Today’s round wasn’t consistent,” added Augustus, who carded a three-over 75 yesterday to go with his 73 from the first round. “I had great moments and then I had some really bad ones.

“I was disappointed but at the same time I feel very confident about my future, as my game is coming together.”

Augustus heads into today’s third and final round of the 54-hole event tied for 36th at four over.

Chandler Eaton holds a one-shot advantage over the rest of the field at the top of the leaderboard.

Augustus is making his second tournament appearance of the week, having also competed at a 36-hole APGA Tour event that concluded at the par-71 TPC Las Vegas layout in Nevada on Tuesday.

He carded a five-over 147 to finish tied for 22nd in a field of 59 and was one of two players rattling in five birdies during the final round.

“I’m getting back to playing some good golf, I just have to tidy up the scorecard,” Augustus said.

“My scores are getting better, just got to cut out the silly mistakes. And that comes with confidence, believing in myself and trust the process that I’m going through.

“The scores are starting to drop as I make my way through this process of not just the physical work but the mental work that I’m doing as well.

“I’m putting in a lot of work right now and I’m happy with the way that my game feels. It’s just a matter of time before you see me with a bunch of podium finishes again.”
