Police and Regiment to be out in force for Covid checks

Busy weekend: Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes (Photograph supplied)

Motorists should not venture out onto the roads this weekend unless they have a valid reason for doing so, police have warned.

Martin Weekes, the Assistant Commissioner of Police said that officers and Royal Bermuda Regiment personnel will be out in force manning checkpoints across the island during the current lockdown, while the island’s waters will be policed by the Bermuda Coast Guard.

Assistant Commissioner Weekes said that officials will be carrying out safety checks on vehicles as well as compliance checks to ensure motorists have a valid reason for being out.

He said: “To assist with these duties, all residents are encouraged to ensure when travelling on the island’s roads or waterways for any permitted reason, that they carry a valid photo ID.”

Drivers will also be expected to show any exemption documentation issued by the Ministry of National Security, or business identification if they are working in a job category exempted under the regulations.

Assistant Commissioner Weekes added: “Uniformed personnel at vehicle checkpoints will, in the interest of public and personal safety, wear a mask and maintain a safe physical distance during interactions with motorists.

“Drivers of four wheeled vehicles should follow all directions given at the checkpoints.

“Also, it is recommended to keep the vehicle’s windows up and place any relevant documentation and/or identification against the nearest window. If necessary, the window can be lowered slightly to ease communication.

“Riders of two wheeled vehicles should also follow all directions given at the checkpoints and wear a mask during any interaction with uniformed personnel.

“Let’s all show care and consideration for the frontline workers manning these checkpoints. They are there to ensure the safety of all of us, by reducing the opportunity for Covid-19 to spread.”
