Corey spoils vasco's perfect run
Vasco were precisely and skillfully dissected by Corey Simmons in this Second Division clash at St. John's field that saw Southampton replace them at the head of the tables.
Simmons simply tore the heart out of Vasco with two fine goals, including the winner five minutes from time, and also provided the corner that enabled centre-back Ryan Belboda to even things at 2-2 after 42 minutes.
In addition to being their first defeat of the season it marked the first time this season that Vasco had conceded a single goal.
Billed as the feature match of the day, Simmons picked the occasion to excel and stand head and shoulders above everybody else with a sterling performance.
It was Simmons, who was an ice-cool general in midfield throughout the game, and delivered the knockout punch that floored Vasco for good with only five minutes remaining.
Substitute Ricky Nisbett collected a ball from his defence and then sent Simmons running down the right flank where the latter remained cool and composed, shook off a challenge and drilled a fierce drive home from an angle on the right.
That was the only excitement of the second half, which was second rate compared to an exciting first 45 minutes.
Simmons shook Vasco after 27 minutes when he opened the scoring, and what a beauty of a shot it was. With the defence retreating he unleashed a fierce left-footed drive from the edge of the area that gave goalkeeper Gerald Sims no chance whatsoever.
But Vasco remained competitive throughout and were level six minutes later through an equally stunning effort by centre-back Paul Towlson who hammered home a 15-yarder on the half-volley after getting a cross from Derek Thomas.
Three minutes later Southampton were trailing 2-1 with Ricky Mallory putting Vasco ahead after left-back Earl Richardson created the pass for him to score from close in.
However, Southampton replied just before the half with Belboda storming through to fimrly head home a corner by Simmons. Vasco did most of the attacking during a quiet second half but the Southampton defence, marshalled well by Belboda, refused to yield. Southampton lacked finishing punch up front though and a draw always looked to be the more likely result.
But Simmons had other ideas and with time running out he settled it with his superb effort.
BAA 0, Social Club 3 Two first-half goals by Rembert Hill combined with one by Troy Darrell ignited Social Club to an easy 3-0 triumph over BAA in the curtain-raiser at Southampton Oval.
The Bluebirds dominated much of the early going and were rewarded with a strike by Darrell after 20 minutes.
Before the Green Knights could recover from this blow they were floored when Hill scored twice in quick succession. His first came in the 34th minute and he popped up again to convert two minutes later.
BAA came out resurgent for the second half but still were not able to create much of a dent in a Social Club back line marshalled by Troy Lewis.
Webster Mills fumbled away two chances to increase the lead midway through the half, shooting weakly straight at the goalkeeper and then blasting over the top.
Norman Correia likewise screwed wide an effort that would have drawn BAA back into the match.
The win kept Social Club in third place three points behind new leaders Southampton.
Prospect 3, Dev. Cougars 2 Devonshire Cougars came charging back and nearly snatched a point at Police field as Prospect nearly threw away a 3-0 half-time lead.
Cougars pulled their first goal back in the first minute of the second half through Devon Brangman following a corner on the left. Then seven minutes later they made it 3-2 when Michael Pond headed home a cross from a Dwayne Bean free kick on the left side of penalty area.
The best chances in the second half fell to Cougars as they hardly looked the team that had trailed by three in the first half as Andrew Rollins opened the scoring for Prospect in the second minute. Clifford Roberts made it 2-0 in the seventh minute before Kenneth Bartrum made it 3-0 four minutes later.
Paget 0, Somerset Eagles 7 Somerset Eagles romped to seven-goal win over Paget in the second match at Devonshire Rec. thanks to a Dion Minors hat-trick and a double strike from Terrence Christopher.
Minors opened the scoring for Eagles in the second minute before Everett Wellman added the second in the fifth minute. It stayed that way until the second half when Minors scored in the 55th and 56th minutes to complete his treble.
Christopher opened his account in the 65th minute and added a second in the 83rd before Craig Brangman closed out the scoring with the team's seventh four minutes from the end.
Wolves 1, Port Royal 0 Shannon Tuzo scored from a shot outside the penalty area in the 72nd minute to earn Wolves both points from this evenly-contested match at Devonshire Rec.
Wolves' second win of the season keeps them in the top half of the standings while the loss was the fourth for Port Royal in five matches.
MAN OF THE HOUR -- Southampton's two-goal hero Corey Simmons fends off Vasco's Anthony Bailey while team-mate Ryan Belboda, the other Ranges scorer, looks on.
