Man stole car battery on New Year’s Day

A 64-year-old man stole a battery from a damaged car at a Pembroke garage.A social inquiry report on Calvin Virgil has now been ordered by Magistrates’ Court.The Hamilton Parish resident took the $90 battery from a car at Rayclan Ltd on New Year’s Day.Crown counsel Nicole Smith said officers on duty in the industrial area off Serpentine Road saw Virgil around 9.50pm.He was dressed in black and carrying a bag over his shoulderThe officers immediately became suspicious. Virgil told them he was walking to a friend’s house.A search of his bag revealed the stolen car battery, which Virgil initially said was a gift from his aunt.In a subsequent police interview, he admitted stealing the battery from a vehicle parked on the Rayclan lot.In court, Virgil pleaded guilty to the theft. He said the car he stole the battery from was extensively damaged and was likely going to be destroyed.“It had no engine. It had been overturned and had been on fire,” he said. “I knew it was going to go to the airport dump. It was totally useless.“It was wrong to take the battery. I should have asked, but it was New Year’s Day. I’m totally embarrassed by this whole thing.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner released Virgil on $2,000 bail until the completion of the social inquiry report next month.
