Steinhoff does the double
Park, capturing both the King of the Downhill and the cross country race, the latter with a thrilling, last-lap victory.
In the downhill, which saw riders go down the course singularly, Steinhoff used a superior opening run to hold off the challenge of Peter Matcham by a little more than two seconds, notching a combined time of two minutes, 2.4 seconds, compared to Matcham's 2:04.59. New Zealander Geoff Wing was third in 2:14.52.
Following the unpredictability of the downhill -- just ask young Trovaughn Smith, who crashed out on the second jump -- more excitement was to follow, with Steinhoff providing most of it in the cross country.
After trailing Wing for eight of the prescribed nine laps, and with Matcham rapidly closing what had been a 30-second gap, Steinhoff dug into his reserves, producing a surge that carried him past Wing with a half lap remaining to win in 41:28. Wing (41:41) did manage to hold off Matcham, who had to settle for third in 43:45.
Young Smith managed to borrow a bike after his earlier crash and promptly rode to victory in the 14-16 category in a fast time of 27:32 over six laps, with Kyle Smith (32:56) second and James Adams (41:20) third.
In the 10-12 group, Chris Smith notched a comfortable win over Owen Burgess, while Tyler Scott showed himself to be one to watch in the future, taking the 12-14 age group by some five minutes ahead of Coyatito Smith.
Veteran Ian Fox rode alone in the senior category, as did under-10 competitor Dominic White, both strolling to wins.
