NSC pool nears completion

The long-awaited Aquatics Centre at the National Sports Centre (NSC), complete with 50-metre pool and diving pool, should be up-and-running by the start of the new year.Sean Tucker, chairman of the NSC trustees, said yesterday the multi-million dollar project, which has been in the pipeline for several years, was between 85 and 90 percent finished. The new centre will eventually be brought under one umbrella along with the NSC’s other facilities, which include a track and field stadium, cricket field and a recently relaid hockey pitch.“I would say the facility is between 85 and 90 percent complete,” said Tucker. “At the same time we are building an electrical substation adjacent to Frog Lane to make sure we have sufficient power for the Aquatics Centre. We expect the construction of the pool to be finished in the early part of November, and the substation to be finished late November/early December.“We hope to be up-and-running by the early part of next year.”Although Tucker admitted there had been a few teething problems along the way, he believed the project was going according to plan.“There have been a few tricky problems and ups and downs but it’s gone according to our plans.” he said. “Where we were initially falling short time wise we picked up elsewhere.”Canadian sports consultant Bernie Asbell is assisting the Government and the trustees in ensure the centre reflects the needs of the whole community, not just those of the Island’s elite athletes.Asbell has helped develop similar-style centres in North America, the Caribbean and Australia.
