The Ewan Sampson Scholarship has been offered in honour of the Saltus Grammar School student who died last year in a cycle accident.

Last week the school held the second Ewan Sampson Memorial day which featured a visit from his parents, Penny and Tyrone, and games, food, and stalls on the school field.

Speaking to senior school students in the assembly hall, Mrs. Sampson told them they should enjoy the day because Ewan would have enjoyed the day.

"We can't emphasise it enough that this means so much to us,'' she said.

"He's up there in heaven looking down and feeling very good about this.'' Mrs. Sampson received cards of thanks and a donation from parents for the scholarship fund, which has now grown to more than $120,000.

She said the scholarship is worth $12,500 for three years of schooling and is open to all Bermudian students, but added they would be really pleased if a Saltus student received the scholarship.

Ewan Sampson died on April 21 last year. In January a coroner ruled he lost control of the cycle when he left the kick stand in the down position.

Ewan -- a computer whiz and readying himself to attend the University of New Brunswick -- died after a head-on collision with a bakery van.

Speaking about donations to the fund, Mrs. Sampson said: "It's not just about the large amounts. It's the small amounts as well that are important.'' Adding that the fund had recently seen an anonymous donation of $20,000, she said: "Small change is appreciated as much as any large amount.''
