Aspiring poet urged to use his talents
An aspiring poet was given a suspended sentence after admitting putting an police officer in a headlock.Dimitri Robinson, 33, from Spring Hill Road, Warwick, pleaded guilty to one count of violently resisting arrest and one count of assaulting a police officer.Magistrates’ Court heard that at around 11.40pm on Thursday, officers responded to a report of a disturbance on Spring Hill Road. When they arrived they found Robinson, and identified him as having an outstanding warrant for a traffic matter. The officers informed Robinson that he was going to be arrested, but when they attempted to arrest him, Robinson swung at one of the officers and ran away, saying: “I’m not going down for some dumb s***.”The officers chased Robinson, but when they caught up, the defendant put one of the officers in a headlock. Police were able to detain Robinson using Captor spray and arrested him, taking him to Hamilton Police Station to be processed and treated.Appearing in custody, Robinson admitted putting the officer in a headlock, but denied that he attempted to punch him.“I’m not really a violent person,” he said. “I was pretty mad at the time. I am trying to get my life back in order. My mother is ill and I’m trying to take care of her.”He also told Magistrate Juan Wolffe that he was working towards publishing a book of poetry, reciting a section of one of his poems in the court.Mr Wolffe gave Robinson a six-month suspended sentence saying: “It sounds like you have a lot of potential and it seems like every year you throw it away.“Don’t let that talent go to waste.”
