No new Palace contract for Nusum

Bermuda international John Barry Nusum has not been offered a new contract by Crystal Palace Baltimore.

He is one of 11 players from last season's roster who have not been handed new deals ahead of the USA Eagles' debut season in the USSF Division 2 Professional League.

The big target man spent the most of last season on the treatment table because of a serious knee injury but had hoped to be fit for the new campaign, which starts next month.

Nusum, 29, returned to Bermuda a few months ago and has been working as a physical education teacher at West End Primary School.

It is not known whether concerns about his fitness were the reason his contract was not renewed.

Goalkeeper Billy Chiles, defenders Shintaro Harada, Alex Ughiovhe, Olawale Adelusimi, Ryan Pierce and Eric Dougnaglo, midfielders Bryan Harkin and Larry Mark, and forwards Nusum, Machel Millwood and Kevin Gnatiko are the players who have been released.

President and Co-Head Coach, Pete Medd commented on some of the departing players: "Robson, Basso, Marshall and Flores each contributed to great defensive records over the last couple of seasons and we think these guys will get it done at the next level."

"Shintaro's burning desire was to move up to MLS – it may still happen and we hope it does.

"He was an unbelievable player for us over our first years of existence, probably our top performer, so we're sad to see him go but the door is always open for a return.

"Bryan Harkin, Larry Mark and Alex Ughiovhe were all part of our inaugural season and they've been great ambassadors for the club, especially Bryan who's had some really huge games for us, so we just wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours."

Nephew of Sam Nusum, the ex-Bermuda goalkeeper and New York Cosmos star, Nusum had hoped his move to Palace would open up possibilities to further advance his career, with the ambitious team the American arm of the English Championship side.

But he tore his anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) in just his fifth USL-D2 game for the club.

He has been troubled by injuries since scoring twice for Bermuda's national team against Trinidad in the summer of 2008 to leapfrog Shaun Goater as the Island's all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup qualifying football.

The USSF D2 Pro League was created by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) in 2010 to last just one season. The twelve-team league was formed as a compromise between the feuding United Soccer Leagues (USL) and the North American Soccer League (NASL).
