Six straight defeats for under-strength Hogges

Bermuda Hogges 1 New Jersey 3Bermuda Hogges’ season has gone from bad to worse after suffering their sixth straight defeat at the hands of New Jersey Rangers in the US on Sunday. The worrying slump has seriously derailed Hogges promising start to the campaign, having drawn their opening two games, with Maurice Lowe’s side now second bottom of the table. It’s now highly unlikely Hogges will achieve their target of improving on last summer’s sixth place finish — the team’s best ever league position — having taken just five points from ten games this term.Without last season’s top scorer Keishen Bean, due to school commitments, and midfield schemer Kwame Steede, so far missing from this summer’s squad, Hogges have too often been swept aside in midfield.Furthermore, Bermuda skipper Khano Smith, the catalyst to last season’s strong finish, is yet to feature this term while defensive lynchpin John Barry Nusum has played just 81 minutes, leaving Hogges devoid of any real experience. While Hogges have struggled on the pitch, perhaps they have also been weaker off it with Devarr Boyles — a driving force behind the Hogges programme in recent years — not seen in the dugout since being made redundant as Bermuda Football Association’s youth director in May.The current crop of players on Hogges’ three-game road trip is arguably the worst to ever travel and therefore it probably shouldn’t be overly surprising that Hogges’ results have not been as good as owner Paul Scope would have expected.Far too many mediocre Premier Division players have been called upon this summer; players that should certainly not even be considered for national team selection for the upcoming Digicel Caribbean Cup.And that’s somwhat ironic considering the 2012 Premier Development League season was meant to be used as preparation for the Caribbean Cup — a competition Bermuda have high hopes for.Against New Jersey, Hogges found themselves trailing in the 14th minute when Samson Malijani opened the scoring.Rangers doubled their lead on 57 minutes through Jack McVey before adding a third nine minutes later when Zachery Gomez got his name on the scoresheet.Lowe’s side did manage a late consolation goal when PHC striker Cecoy Robinson found the net.Hogges are back in action tomorrow against Central Jersey.Bermuda Hogges: T Hall, D Ming, S Smith, R Lee, R DeShields (D Williams, 68) J Swan, D Bascome, D Coddington, L Simmons, A Russell, L Dill (C Robinson, 45)Substitutes not used: I Sharrieff, T Ming, T BellGoals: Robinson, 87Yellow cards: RussellNew Jersey: A Moore, D Rasoilo, A Vest-Hansen, L Andre, A Brito, P Cunha, P Vilar, S Malijani, J McVey, K Zalewski, P KillianSubstitutes: Z Gomez, J Gorksie, N Santos, Z Adler, H Harr, S GrazianiGoals: Malijani, 14, McVey, 57, Gomez, 68Yellow cards: GomezReferee: K Larwa
