New executive director for Women’s Resource Centre
A new executive director will take the helm at the Women's Resource Centre this weekend.
Tina Laws will take over from Elaine Butterfield at the women’s rights and advocacy charity in Hamilton on Saturday.
Ms Laws said: “I am encouraged and confident that every experience leading up to this point in my life has prepared me to serve the wonderful women in our community.”
The WRC said Ms Laws had joined at “an exciting and critical time” because of higher service demand sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ms Laws’ background includes time as a corrections and probation officer and as an education therapist with the Department of Education.
She has also worked at two overseas domestic abuse shelters for women and children.
Ms Laws is a relationship coach and campaigner for women's rights and gender equality.
She has a Bachelor's degree in psychology, and a postgraduate degree in criminal justice.
Ms Law will shadow Ms Butterfield, who retires on July 30, to ensure a smooth transition.
The WRC board said: “Elaine's exemplary leadership has helped fortify the organisation to face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
“We simply could not be more grateful for how she has stewarded the WRC's critical work.”
Ms Butterfield will remain involved in social services through the new Transformational Living Centre, a shelter for women and children on North Street in Pembroke.
