Youth summit planned
House this evening.
The event, which will feature the group His and Hers, songstress Lady Tyson and Reggae Sound Soul Jah One, is being put on by the Youth Summit Committee.
Committee organiser Mr. Cleveland Simmons, said the fun day is a means of getting young people to meet and socialise with each other.
"We went all across Bermuda from St. George's to Somerset and we spoke to all the guys sitting on the wall,'' he explained.
"They all said they have nothing to do but we also found that there is a lot of talent out there as well.
"What we have to do now is to absorb that talent.'' The theme of this year's Youth Summit events is "Moving in the right direction.'' It is aimed at young people between the ages of nine until 18.
Gina Spence Bean who handles the entertainment side of the committee's work, said the party is a precursor for the main event in August.
"This is the second year that we have had the Youth Summit,'' she said. "And we have targeted youth groups like the majorettes, girl guides and brownies.
We want to offer young people a platform to deal with the problems they face on their own level.'' Mrs. Spence Bean said the committee has been meeting for the past month and brainstorming ways to get more young people involved.
The party at Government House is just one of the ideas. In addition to the reggae and rhythm and blues performers, there will also be a gospel group performing called Spiritual Peace.
"We want to get our young people out there,'' she said. "And make them feel that they are not separate.''
