Ailey’s giant step into the unknown
Starting September, the 16-year-old Somersfield student will finish the last two years of high school at Canada’s Lester B Pearson College of the Pacific, which is on Vancouver Island.Ailey has twice attended diversity leadership conferences for her school — and the global education offered by UWC offered more of a good thing.“The conferences made me more aware and open-minded as a person, and when I heard about the UWC programme it sounded just like one of them, which made me want to apply,” the Warwick teen explained. The British-based UWC was founded 50 years ago to unite young people across lines of difference, and has kept true to its ideals of appreciating differences.Taken by a school presentation on the group, which has 12 schools and colleges around the world, Ailey applied to UWC’s Bermuda National Committee, and found herself going through the lengthy interview. The acceptance call shortly after her second interview left her “in shock”, Ailey said — she’d worried that she hadn’t talked enough.“It’s an incredibly feeling. I fell in love with the school and its beautiful campus.“Everyone there is on scholarship. It’s about learning about different cultures and bringing it all together in one community.”Spending the next two years of school so far from home, plus parents Paul and Jennifer and her younger brother Arran, won’t be easy, she conceded.“I’m going to see all my friends over the summer before I go,” she said.To learn more about the programme, e-mail uwcbermuda@gmail.com.Useful website: www.uwc.org.
