Great Scott! Go-karter roars to victory in US

Bermudian go-karter Scott Barnes took the chequered flag in Wisconsin last weekend in dramatic fashion.

Competing in the 125cc Shifter Class on the four-mile long Road America Raceway, and clocking speeds of what he believed to be 120 miles per hour, Barnes pipped three rivals by a tenth of a second to win the Pro Sunday Series.

It was a triumph, recorded on the biggest kart race track in the US, that went a long way towards overcoming the disappointment of earlier blowing four tyres that might have cost the 20 year-old professional driver any shot at winning the overall Enduro Pro Race Championship with three races left in the series.

After the frustration of finishing 20th and 39th due to burst front tyres, Barnes rebounded by placing a respectable ninth in the second race of the Enduro series before hitting the jackpot in the Sunday event and returning home victorious earlier this week.

That inspired performance saw Barnes beat out 72 shifter drivers in his class en route to capturing his 12th overall win in the US and second of the season.

Commenting on his recent performances, Barnes stated: ?It was definitely one of my best finishes ever. This race was one of the biggest races in North America and so it was pretty intimidating going into it. But I knew I could do it and this is really a big win for me.?

Barnes placed himself in contention from the outset, qualifying second overall to begin on the outside pole. The Bermudian missed out taking the pole by a mere one thousandth of a second.

?On the start the flag went down and about seven or eight cars went by me and I fell back to eighth,? he recalled. ?I remained among the lead pack of about 12 cars for the first two lap where we were battling back and forth. But by the third lap, four of us managed to break away and stay out front for the remainder of the race.?

While there was no shortage of excitement throughout the 25-minute or ten-lap race, the real drama would unfold right at the end.

?We finished four wide heading to the chequered flag and I won by fraction of a second,? he added. ?It was a close finish. I was in fourth coming up to the finish line and I managed to draft past them at the last second.?

As for experiencing the agony of blowing four tyres during the Championship Enduro series, Barnes lamented: ?That was just really frustrating.?

The local pro plans to return to the US on July 10 to compete at Grand Rapids Michigan.

Barnes won his first race of this season in May at the Gingerman Raceway in Michigan.

In the meantime, the local driver has other plans. ?I intend to do some fishing with my father (Michael Barnes) to try and make some money to pay for my racing,? he added.
